J-Term Day 7

Day 7

Today was another arts day which was annoying since I only had until 9:15 to work with the kids. However even though I only had a small amount of time to work with them, I still was able to accomplish a lot of stuff. This morning I worked with Mia, Lilia, and Taylor on money. We started with remembering the names of the coins and how much each of them are worth. I then gave them an assortment of coins and had them name all of the coins and tell me how much money it was. Once they got good at that I moved on to flashcards that had coins on them (basically the same thing but they liked it better because they got to hold on to the flashcard when they got it correct.) After that we moved on to the final phase of their training and I went around the circle and had each person tell me a way to get $1.50. We started with Mia saying 6 quarters, then the next person said 2 half dollars and 2 quarters, then we got 15 dimes, 150 pennies 3 half dollars, and then Mia gave me what was probably my favorite answer ever. She got one of every coin (96¢) One half dollar, one quarter, one dime, one nickel and one penny.  Then she did something that I really liked. She added one half dollar, added a nickel ($1.51) and then added a penny and said she was done, I asked how that equaled $1.50 and she said “well, minus the penny” as in taking the penny away from the $1.51 even though that penny wasn’t part of it she used it to represent the answer. Which was SO cool! After that I told them there was a way to do it with one coin. The looked at me in amazement and thought about it for maybe 2 minutes. They all told me that you couldn't do that, so I rested my hand on the stack of fake dollar bills and said “are you suuuuure?” and I put my hand back. They all looked shocked and amazed and one of them (I think it was Taylor) immediately grabbed the dollar and put it on the table with a half dollar and said “DONE!” Their amazement at that and Mia’s interesting solution were both so cool to see. Whenever I had to leave today, right when I was walking out the door three of my students gave me little notes and the notes were SO SWEET!!! All of them were absolutely adorable. I’m so sad that tomorrow is my last day there.  :(

Even though I was only there for a short time today I still believe that I fulfilled Learning Outcome 2 ("Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process"). I showed that I had undertaken this challenge and that I developed in my ability to teach and I showed that I have improved with the fact that I was able to help them learn so much in such a small timeframe. I believe that this falls under Service because I am there to help them and I believe that I did so.
